Direct Estimation vs Modules in Spain: What Changes?

What you take on in direct estimation: real income and expense proof, books, modelo 130 vs 131, renunciation or exclusion, and risks versus modules.

Entering direct estimation is not a slogan about “paying for what is real”. It is a change of method. Personal income tax (IRPF) stops measuring your activity with modules and starts requiring income and expenses you can evidence, books kept properly, a different instalment-payment form and, if you came from the simplified VAT regime tied to modules, a different VAT arrangement as well.

Direct estimation (estimación directa) determines the net yield of the activity as the difference between computable gross income and deductible expenses that are properly evidenced and recorded; objective estimation (estimación objetiva, or modules/módulos) does not start from that real flow, but from signs, indexes or modules fixed for each activity. AEAT, normal modality; AEAT, objective estimation; IRPF Law, articles 16, 30 and 31.

If you work in the common tax territory and leave objective estimation, have been excluded, or start already in direct estimation, this is what you take on. This guide does not recalculate your 2026 modules quota, does not cover foral regimes or IGIC, and does not replace a personalised engagement. Detail on deductible expenses is in tax-deductible business expenses in Spain; the quarterly VAT and IRPF circuit is in quarterly VAT and income tax for freelancers.

What you take on when you enter

Your IRPF yield is built from your activity figures, not from staff headcount, square metres or tables in an Order. You keep and record the proof. You file modelo 130 instead of modelo 131. And if your modules were coordinated with simplified VAT, you review that regime too.

The Law treats this method as the general one, with two modalities (normal and simplified), and objective estimation as a method for specific activities unless there is renunciation or exclusion. IRPF Law, article 16.

Direct estimation versus modules: what actually differs

How each method calculates

Under this method, net yield is the difference between computable income (sales, services, own consumption, subsidies and similar items) and deductible expenses that are evidenced and entered in the accounts or in the mandatory record books, and that are necessary to obtain the income. The reductions set out in the rules may then apply. AEAT, normal modality; AEAT, simplified modality.

Under objective estimation, for activities other than agricultural, livestock and forestry, yield does not follow that flow. It is calculated with objective data (staff module, premises area, tables, bar length, vehicle load, kilometres and so on) according to the activity. AEAT, objective estimation.

If you paid little under modules with a heavy expense base, this method only lowers the yield when those expenses are deductible and proven. If you overpaid under modules because you billed little against the signs, you may do better, but only when the real accounts support it.

Who can stay in modules (the mechanism, not your quota)

You can apply objective estimation if the activity is in the Order that develops the regime, you have not renounced, there are no incompatibilities with other methods, you have not renounced and are not excluded from the simplified VAT regime (nor from IGIC, outside this scope), you do not exceed the Order’s specific magnitudes or the previous-year gross-income and purchases limits, and you do not carry on the activity outside Spanish territory except for transport exceptions. AEAT, objective estimation; IRPF Law, article 31.

The AEAT states that, from 2016 through 2026 inclusive, the temporary gross-income volume limits of €150,000 and €75,000 rise to €250,000 and €125,000 respectively, and that the previous year’s volume of purchases of goods and services cannot exceed €250,000 (excluding acquisitions of fixed assets / inmovilizado). AEAT, objective estimation. This page does not calculate your threshold or your modules yield. It only covers the entry and exit mechanism.

Simplified modality and normal modality

You can apply the simplified modality of direct estimation if you do not determine any activity under objective estimation or normal direct estimation, the net turnover of all activities in the previous year does not exceed €600,000, and you have not renounced it. If the previous year was the start year, you annualise turnover. AEAT, simplified modality; IRPF Law, article 30.

The normal modality applies, among other cases, when you are in neither simplified nor objective estimation, or when the net turnover of all activities exceeds €600,000 in the immediately preceding year, or when you were excluded from simplified in any of the three previous tax years. AEAT, normal modality.

Simplified features that often decide the choice

Under simplified, tangible fixed assets are depreciated on a straight-line basis under a specific simplified table, and the amount of deductible provisions and hard-to-justify expenses is 5% of positive net yield (excluding those items), capped at €2,000. If you apply that 5% deduction, you cannot apply the reduction for economically dependent self-employed workers or those with a single unrelated client. AEAT, simplified modality.

Under the normal modality there is no such 5% with a €2,000 cap. You apply the general expense and depreciation rules and, when the activity is mercantile, Commercial Code accounting. If you renounce simplified or are excluded from it, you determine the yield of all activities under the normal modality for the following three years. IRPF Law, article 30; AEAT, exclusion.

Renunciation, exclusion and incompatibility

How you renounce modules

Renunciation of objective estimation is notified with modelo 036 in December before the year of effect (or when starting the activity), or tacitly by filing the first instalment payment with modelo 130; it has a minimum effect of three years and, if you meet the requirements, places you in the simplified modality. AEAT, renunciation; IRPF Regulations.

After those three years, the renunciation rolls forward on its own unless you revoke it in time with a census return and you still meet the objective-estimation requirements. You do not enter and leave every quarter. AEAT, renunciation.

What happens if you are excluded

Grounds for exclusion include, among others, exceeding the Order’s limits and magnitudes, exceeding gross-income or purchases limits, carrying on the activity outside Spanish territory (with transport exceptions), determining any activity under direct estimation, or being excluded from the simplified VAT regime. Exclusion places you, for the following three years, in simplified direct estimation if you meet that modality’s requirements. AEAT, exclusion.

Exclusion from simplified for exceeding €600,000 of turnover in the previous year takes effect from the start of the immediately following year and puts you in the normal modality for the following three years. AEAT, exclusion.

You cannot “leave one activity in modules”

If you determine the yield of one of your activities under direct estimation, you must determine all of the activities you carry on under that method, even if some could sit in modules. Exception: if you carry on an activity under objective estimation and start another that is not included or for which you renounce, they may coexist until year-end; the incompatibility takes effect the following year. AEAT, incompatibilities; IRPF Law, article 31.

Books and proof: what changes day to day

Under modules, the record-keeping load is lighter: issued and received invoices, supporting documents for signs, indexes or modules, and an investment-goods book if you deduct depreciation (plus a sales or income book in certain agricultural activities). AEAT, accounting and record-keeping obligations.

Under simplified direct estimation, if you are a business owner you must keep a sales-and-income record book, a purchases-and-expenses book, and an investment-goods book. If you are a professional in direct estimation (normal or simplified), the books are income, expenses, investment goods, and provisions of funds and disbursements on account. AEAT, accounting and record-keeping obligations.

Under normal direct estimation, if the business activity is mercantile, the obligation is to keep accounts in line with the Commercial Code. If it is not mercantile (for example certain agricultural, livestock, forestry or craft activities in the Commercial Code’s terms), the sales-and-income, purchases-and-expenses, and investment-goods record books are enough. AEAT, accounting and record-keeping obligations.

You must also keep, for the limitation period, supporting documents for operations, income, expenses, reductions and deductions. AEAT, accounting and record-keeping obligations. Without that trail, deducting expenses invites a regularisation. Which expenses are usually accepted or not is covered in tax-deductible business expenses in Spain. In this method, an expense that is not in the book does not help you, even when it feels logical.

Modelo 130 versus modelo 131

Modelo 131 is the IRPF instalment payment for anyone who determines yield under objective estimation. AEAT, modelo 131. Modelo 130 is the instalment payment for activities under direct estimation, in either modality. AEAT, modelo 130 instructions.

On the 130, for non-agricultural activities, you start from income and expenses accumulated from 1 January to the end of the quarter, obtain net yield and, as a general rule, apply 20% to the positive amount (with territorial specialities). Filing windows are, in general terms, 1 to 20 April, July and October, and 1 to 30 January of the following year for the fourth quarter. AEAT, modelo 130 instructions.

Individuals who carry on professional activities are not obliged to file the instalment payment or to pay under that heading if, in the immediately preceding calendar year, at least 70% of the income from those activities was subject to withholding or payment on account. When starting activity, the percentage for the quarter itself is used. AEAT, modelo 130 instructions.

Filing the first 130 on time also counts as tacit renunciation of modules. If you were still on the 131 and change method halfway through, do not guess the quarter’s form. Align the census, the method and the self-assessment with your gestoría. The quarterly map is in what your accountant should do each quarter and in quarterly VAT and income tax for freelancers.

IRPF and VAT: coordinated under modules, not the same thing

The IRPF estimation method and the VAT regime are different taxes. Even so, the rules coordinate them when you are in modules.

To be in the simplified VAT regime you must be, for the same activity, in objective estimation for IRPF. Renunciation of objective estimation for IRPF also means renouncing, for VAT, the simplified regime and the agriculture, livestock and fisheries regime. Conversely, renunciation of or exclusion from the simplified VAT regime excludes you from objective estimation for IRPF. Not every IRPF modules activity sits in simplified VAT: depending on the case it may be in equivalence surcharge or in REAGP. AEAT, coordination of simplified VAT and objective IRPF estimation.

When you leave modules for this method, you usually end up in the general VAT regime. That is not the same change as the IRPF one: how you settle VAT, the book and, where relevant, the 303 all move. Do not confuse it with VAT cash accounting, which only shifts the moment of accrual. And do not confuse the IRPF method with invoicing or VERI*FACTU obligations covered in VERI*FACTU for freelancers on modules.

Decision criterion: when entering (or staying) makes sense

Enter direct estimation when your real, evidenced expenses clearly exceed what modules capture, when you have been excluded, or when you no longer meet the Order’s limits; stay in modules only if the activity remains included, you have not renounced and are not excluded, and you can live with a yield that does not mirror your real profit and loss. AEAT, objective estimation; AEAT, exclusion.

Before you tick renunciation on the 036 or file the first 130 out of curiosity, write down four answers:

  1. Can I evidence income and expenses month by month, not only when closing the annual return?
  2. Who keeps the books (or mercantile accounts), at what cost and on what deadlines?
  3. Have I measured the VAT effect — exit from simplified or other linked special regimes — as well as the IRPF effect?
  4. Do I accept three years out of modules if I renounce, or am I only reacting to one bad quarter?

If the answer to 1 or 2 is “we’ll see”, the operating mess usually eats the saving. If you are excluded, preference does not matter: you prepare for the books, the form change and the new method. Service options for modules, without duplicating this method decision, are in online gestoría for freelancers on modules.

Frequent mistakes when switching

Treating the switch as a three-month trial. Renunciation of objective estimation lasts at least three years. AEAT, renunciation.

Keeping the 131 when you are already in this method, or filing a 130 without having left modules. The form follows the method.

Assuming that under simplified the 5% frees you from justifying the rest of the expenses. That percentage is a specific item with a cap; everything else still needs evidence and recording. AEAT, simplified modality.

Forgetting VAT coordination and finding out in January that the 303 no longer fits the previous regime. AEAT, coordination.

Leaving one activity in modules “because that one fits” while another runs under this method. The general incompatibility blocks that, except for the mid-year start exception. AEAT, incompatibilities.

What to do now

  1. Confirm which method you are on today (objective, simplified direct or normal) and whether any exclusion ground is already on the table.
  2. List real income and expenses for the last full year and the current year and, without inventing modules quotas, compare your real result with a yield by signs.
  3. Review with your gestoría the required books, the modelo 130 or 131 that applies, and the linked VAT regime.
  4. If renunciation must take effect next year, prepare the 036 in December (or weigh tacit renunciation with the first 130) with time to spare; do not leave it for the last business day.
  5. Decide who captures invoices and who closes the quarter; the checklist in what your accountant should do each quarter helps split the work.

If you need a concrete tax and accounting engagement, see TaxFactory’s tax and accounting service or contact the team. This guide is limited to Spain’s common state IRPF territory: it does not resolve the Basque Country, Navarre, IGIC, or an individual 2026 modules calculation; nor does it replace your accountant’s engagement or decide your census option. AEAT, simplified modality; IRPF Law.

Frequently asked questions

What really changes when you move from modules to direct estimation?

You stop calculating net yield with signs, indexes or modules and move to gross income minus deductible expenses that are properly evidenced and recorded. The instalment payment switches from modelo 131 to modelo 130, and you take on stricter record books (or mercantile accounting under the normal modality when the activity is mercantile).

Does renouncing modules always put you in normal direct estimation?

No. Renunciation of objective estimation places you, if you meet the requirements, in the simplified modality of direct estimation for at least three years. The normal modality applies if you exceed the turnover threshold, renounce simplified, or are excluded from it.

Can I leave one activity in modules and another in direct estimation?

As a general rule, no. If you determine any activity under direct estimation, you must determine all of them under that method. There is a temporary exception if you start mid-year an activity that is not included or for which you renounce: until year-end they may coexist, and the incompatibility takes effect the following year.

Does modelo 130 replace the VAT modelo 303?

No. Modelo 130 is the IRPF instalment payment under direct estimation; modelo 303 is the periodic VAT self-assessment. They are separate obligations. The IRPF method and the VAT regime are coordinated under modules, but they are not the same tax.

Does a professional with heavy withholdings have to file modelo 130?

Individuals who carry on professional activities are not obliged to file the instalment payment or to pay under that heading if, in the immediately preceding calendar year, at least 70% of the income from those activities was subject to withholding or payment on account. When starting activity, the percentage for the quarter itself is used.

If I renounce modules, what happens to the simplified VAT regime?

Renunciation of objective estimation for IRPF also means renouncing, for VAT, the simplified regime and the agriculture, livestock and fisheries regime. Conversely, renunciation of or exclusion from the simplified VAT regime excludes you from objective estimation for IRPF. Do not confuse that link with the general VAT regime or with cash accounting.
